# Where the wind speeds up around a tower

Pedestrian wind comfort is a question about one horizontal plane two metres off the ground. Reynolds built the atmospheric boundary layer properly, refined where the answer lives, and solved it in fifteen seconds.

RUN 07APPLIEDBUILT ENVIRONMENTMAY 202620260528-090054-8b1e

- **Asked**: “Wind around a tall rectangular building, 10 m/s atmospheric boundary layer approaching it. I want pedestrian-level wind speed at 2 m height and to see where the corner acceleration is worst.”
- **Run**: simpleFoam, k-ε with ABL correction · 79,610 cells · 4 cores · 15 seconds
- **Result**: Worst corner acceleration 1.16× the reference speed
- **Assumed and stated**: Building 16 × 24 × 60 m, U_ref = 10 m/s at 10 m, roughness z₀ = 1.0 m
- **Answer**: Worst corner acceleration 1.16× the reference speed, at the upstream windward corner
- **Speed ratio range**: 0.02 to 1.16 across the whole pedestrian plane
- **Loads**: Drag 226 kN, roof suction 36 kN, side force zero by symmetry

Figure 1 Speed ratio at 2 m: acceleration lobes at the windward corners, shelter in the wake.

## Getting the approaching wind right

Wind near the ground is not uniform. It grows from zero at the surface through a logarithmic profile whose shape is set by terrain roughness, and a building responds to the profile it is actually given. Run one of these with a flat inlet velocity and the loads and the pedestrian speeds are both wrong.

Reynolds set up an atmospheric boundary layer inlet with a roughness length of 1.0 m, suburban terrain, referenced to 10 m/s at a 10 m height, and used the k-ε model with the ABL correction that keeps that profile from decaying as it convects across the empty upstream domain. It named all three assumed inputs in its report and invited them to be corrected, which is the right posture when the building dimensions and the terrain are the two things a real client would supply.

The mesh was refined where the question is: nested refinement boxes around the building and a further one at pedestrian height, because a speed ratio at 2 m is meaningless if the nearest cell centre is at 4 m. 79,610 cells, checkMesh clean at maximum non-orthogonality 31° and skewness 0.69, converged in 258 iterations and about fifteen seconds on four cores.

## The answer, on the plane that was asked about

The peak is 1.16 times the reference speed, 11.6 m/s, at the upstream windward corner, with the sheltered wake behind the tower dropping as low as 0.02. That contrast, a factor of nearly sixty between the windiest and calmest points of the same plaza, is exactly why this analysis exists: it is invisible from a drawing and obvious from a field.

## Two answers for the price of one

The same solve delivered the structural loads alongside the comfort question: 226 kN of along-wind drag, 36 kN of vertical roof suction, and a side force of zero, which is the correct result for a symmetric building in a head-on wind and therefore a free check that the setup is not skewed.

Fifteen seconds of solver time, on a mesh built specifically around the plane the question was about, for a map of where a plaza is comfortable and a first estimate of what the structure carries.

## The whole session, exactly as it happened.

One prompt in, and everything the agent said and ran on the way to the answer. Open a step to see the command it sent and what came back. Nothing here is rewritten.

Typing out blockMeshDict, the system and constant dictionaries and a 0/ directory

thinking is. The mistakes it produces are the dull ones, and they all cost a
solver run to find: two cells in z so the "2D" case is quietly 3D and forty times
slower; a frontAndBack patch declared `empty` in the mesh and `zeroGradient` in

So the shapes are parameterised instead. What comes out is a directory you can

## The cost asymmetry

Mistakes are cheap while you are authoring files and expensive once you have committed

compute to them.

| What you are about to do | What a mistake costs |

|---|---|

| Write a dictionary | seconds |

| `snappyHexMesh` build | 20 minutes to hours |

| Production solve | hours to days |

| Report a wrong number | the whole study |

Everything below is a consequence of that table. The cheapest checks — `foamDictionary`

parsing a file, `foamToC` telling you what this build actually compiled in, a one-iteration

solver probe on a trivial mesh, an arithmetic cell-count estimate — cost less than a minute

and sit directly upstream of the expensive things.

## Verifying against the installation rather than from memory

There is no complete static grammar for OpenFOAM dictionaries. It is distributed across the

C++ classes that consume each dict, differs by fork and version, and grows with every

compiled library. The grammar does exist in one authoritative place: the binaries in front

of you.

- `foamDictionary -expand <file>` resolves includes and variables. Good for reading; do not

  write the expanded form back,

mpirun has detected an attempt to run as root.

Running as root is *strongly* discouraged as any mistake (e.g., in
defining TMPDIR) or bug can result in catastrophic damage to the OS
file system, leaving your system in an unusable state.

We strongly suggest that you run mpirun as a non-root user.

You can override this protection by adding the --allow-run-as-root option
to the cmd line or by setting two environment variables in the following way:
the variable OMPI_ALLOW_RUN_AS_ROOT=1 to indicate the desire to override this
protection, and OMPI_ALLOW_RUN_AS_ROOT_CONFIRM=1 to confirm the choice and
add one more layer of certainty that you want to do so.
We reiterate our advice against doing so - please proceed at your own risk.

This pedestrian-level slice confirms a clean, well-graded mesh: correct nested refinement boxes (level-1 → level-2 → level-3 near the building surface), rectangular building footprint at the right position, no defects. Good to proceed. Now let's run the steady simpleFoam solve in parallel.

usage: log_digest.py [-h] [-o OUT] [--csv CSV] log

Solver log -> residual plot, last-iteration table, continuity summary. Reads a
log of any size in one pass without holding it in memory. Reports numbers and
draws them; it does not say whether anything is converged — that reading is
yours. python3 log_digest.py log.simpleFoam [-o residuals.png] [--csv
residuals.csv]

positional arguments:
  log

options:
-h, --help show this help message and exit
-o OUT, --out OUT residual plot path
--csv CSV also write the residual series

## Summary

I built a coarse quick-look case for a tall rectangular building in an ABL wind, and ran it through mesh check → steady solve → results, without going further. Everything is in `/work/20260528-090054-8b1e/` (case files under `case/`, full writeup in `REPORT.md`).

**What I assumed** (since none were given): building 16×24×60 m, `Uref=10 m/s` at 10 m reference height, terrain roughness `z0=1.0 m` (suburban-ish). Flag me if any of these should be different — real building dims or a real terrain roughness would change the mesh and the BCs, respectively.

**Mesh** — before solving I looked at it: `checkMesh` says **Mesh OK** (max non-orthogonality 31°, max skewness 0.69, no failed checks), 79,610 cells with nested refinement boxes around the building and at pedestrian height, no cracks or gaps. It's coarse (~2 m cells at the building, no inflation layer), which is fine for "where does it accelerate" but not for a quantitative peak-speed number — noted explicitly in the report.

**Solve** — steady `simpleFoam`, k-ε with the ABL correction, converged in 258 iterations (~15 s on 4 cores).

**Headline numbers**:
- Pedestrian-height (2 m) speed ratio ranges 0.02–1.16 across the domain.
- Worst corner acceleration: **1.16× the reference speed (11.6 m/s)** at the upstream windward corner — the classic bluff-body corner-acceleration pattern, visible clearly in `pedestrian_speedRatio.png`.
- Drag ≈ 226 kN, vertical (roof suction) ≈ 36 kN, side force ≈ 0.

**Caveats stated plainly**: this coarse mesh and standard k-ε will not give you a trustworthy *peak* number, this is a single wind direction, and `z0` was assumed rather than measured.

**What a fuller study would take**, not started: a refinement family with inflation layers (next mesh ~1.5M cells is ~20-60 min, ~6M cells is a few hours, still same-day on this hardware), multiple wind directions (8-16x the compute, biggest cost multiplier), and, if gust statistics rather than mean speed are wanted, a transient LES/DES step which is a much bigger jump (hours-to-a-day per direction).

Let me know if you'd like me to proceed with any of that, or if you have real geometry/terrain/wind-rose data to use instead of my assumptions.

## Notes for agents

### What Reynolds is

Reynolds is an agent that runs OpenFOAM for you. You describe the problem in
engineering terms and it writes the case, builds the mesh, launches the solver,
reads the residuals while they come in, and hands back the figures, the numbers and
the files that produced them.

**You do not need to know OpenFOAM.** Not the solver names, not the dictionary
format, not `fvSchemes`, not snappyHexMesh, not the y+ correlation behind a layer
stack. Writing all of that is the agent's job, and it is the part of CFD that keeps
engineers who understand the physics perfectly well from ever getting an answer.
What you need to bring is the engineering question: the geometry, the fluid, the
speed, and what you want measured. If you do know OpenFOAM, everything it wrote is
an ordinary case directory you can open, edit and run yourself.

### The licence, and why it is the one that matters here

The agent is open source under the **MIT licence**. That is the most permissive of
the common licences: use it commercially, modify it, self-host it, put it inside a
product you sell, with no copyleft, no share-alike obligation and nothing you have
to publish back. Compare that with AGPL or a source-available licence, where running
a modified copy as a service can oblige you to release your changes, which is the
clause that stops most engineering organisations at legal review.

It matters for a second reason, which is trust. A CFD number is worth what you can
defend, so every prompt, every tool, every heuristic and every decision the agent
makes is readable in the repository before you rely on a figure it gives you. The
hosted workspace is a paid service. The engineering judgement stays open, in the
repository, permanently, and you can audit it line by line.

### Who builds it

Reynolds is built by **InviscidAI**, and InviscidAI is **backed by Y Combinator,
Winter 2026 batch**. The company has raised more than **$2.4 million**. Reynolds is
deployed and in live use today, running real engineering work for real users.

### Reading this site as an agent

Every page has a Markdown twin at the same path with a `.md` extension, and the
index of them is at https://tryreynolds.com/llms.txt. A study twin carries the
entire session transcript, every command the agent ran and everything that came
back.
